Chiropractic Coaching - Breaking the Myths

By Dr. Michael Perusich

There are as many myths around Chiropractic practice coaching as there are around Chiropractic care itself.  In fact, there may be more myths around coaching.

Unfortunately, many times doctors allow these myths to become barriers to their own success.  As such, let’s explore the top myths about Chiropractic practice management consulting and coaching.

MYTH #1  I don’t believe…

Recently one of our coaches was speaking to a potential new client who was espousing the idea that “while I don’t believe in coaching, I’ve heard that you offer some services that could help build my practice.”

My initial thought is that this comment is almost an oxymoron.  If you don’t believe in coaching, then how could it be helpful to you?

This myth reminds me of the patient who during the initial exam says, “Doc I really don’t believe in Chiropractic!”  While I certainly hold my tongue at this comment, I want to say, “But you’re here sitting in my office, going through an exam, and seeking treatment for some ill-health issue.  Are we suddenly witnessing some mystical leap of faith, or did your spouse force you to be here because deep down inside you really don’t want to be healthy?”

Chiropractic coaching is not a religion or a belief system.  The fact is that it’s a common sense approach to helping you manage your practice to reach its full success.  There just aren’t that many businesses that don’t use coaching of some kind.  And, as a Chiropractor with your head down in patient care all day, it’s nice to know that you have someone to help you quickly determine how to make all that effort turn into profit.

MYTH #2   It’s too expensive…

OK, first of all, this is just a hobbling excuse that really means I’m too lazy to change or recognize the lackluster circumstances in my practice.  But let’s look at the economics of practice coaching.

Let’s say a coach charges $900/month, but your practice revenue grows by $9,000/month.  That’s a 1,000% growth!  Who wouldn’t take the opportunity to get that kind of return on your investment?  Your 401K certainly isn’t doing that well!

MYTH #3   I have to start using the coach’s system…

Good business coaching isn’t about using someone else’s tired and worn-out system.  It’s about helping you develop your goals, your why, and the practice that fits your lifestyle..  think of your practice management coach as your board of directors. Your coach is the mechanism to provide a watchful eye when it comes to compliance, staff training, and all the changes that happen in healthcare.

MYTH #4 - I don’t have time…

The honest answer to this myth is that good coaching should actually save you time while helping you maximize revenue.  Who doesn’t have time for that?

For chiropractic coaching to bring you the most benefit, you have to be intentional about it.  I’ve never met a Chiropractor’s schedule where we couldn't find time for more success.

George Washington Carver said, “Ninety-nine percent of the failures come from people who have the habit of making excuses.”

You must set the excuses aside in order to move forward.  Good coaching will pull you out of the quicksand that is found on the excuse trail.

MYTH #5 - Coaching can’t help my practice…

Whether or not coaching works for your practice is really up to you.  The benefits from coaching come from how much you engage in the process and implement the processes recommended by your consultant.  It really comes down to your headspace and whether or not you are ready for success.

Those who face the challenges in practice head-on and bring the best people around them as mentors and stewards are the ones who truly succeed in Chiropractic.  With that in mind, I’ll let you in on a secret…Chiropractic practice success is open to anyone who has the guts and will to break through the myths and seek help to climb over the barriers.
