Dr. Michael Perusich:

Doctors are your goals, building your future, or breaking your life. Hi everybody. Welcome to the KC Chiro Pulse podcast, brought to you by Kats Consultants and Chiro Health USA. I'm Dr. Michael Perusich, and I'm joined with my co-host, Dr. Troy Fox. Troy. Goals. You and I are so goals oriented. And yet. I see so many doctors who just are flapping in the wind and running by the seat of their pants, and they don't have a plan. And so how do we help doctors make. Make a plan, create some goals but make it stick. How do we help them align that? Yeah.

Dr. Troy Fox:

And I see a lot of people too that will write their goals down and they'll never come to fruition. And the problem is that creates a lot of negative self-talk. And that's where I'm gonna head with this because negative self-talk is pervasive, it is infectious, and it's heavy. It'll ruin your life and it's heavy. And so it'll weigh you down. There's a couple things that we need here because if I'm going to explore what goals that I can meet, and I'm gonna write goals and be serious about it, I have to be serious about my life, meaning that. I have to have all the way back at the very beginning. We'll start at the beginning and then we'll roll forward to how you get to your goals because so many times we miss our goals because we're too busy in negative self talk. Oh, there's no way I could meet that goal. I'm not gonna meet it anyway. So why should I try? I'm not even gonna do the action step today. You know what? I'm gonna go home and take a nap after work. I'm not even gonna try to do that.

Dr. Michael Perusich:

Can I say something right there? Yeah.'cause when we're thinking like that, we're thinking about what's happened in the past. We're backward thinking. And I've always believed that to, to really make goals work, you have to be forward thinking.

Dr. Troy Fox:

Yep.

Dr. Michael Perusich:

And not backward.

Dr. Troy Fox:

So to be forward thinking, the first thing that we have to do is have a creed or a standard, I don't care which one you want to call it. You have a creed that you follow every day, or a standard creed. What is my minimum standard or what is my creed? And here's the thing, if you don't have your standard or your creed set high enough to where you fail sometimes you probably aren't doing it right. In other words, you have to have a standard that you're gonna meet every day. I'm gonna, I'm gonna, so here's where my day starts every day, and I talk d Dr. PRUs and I talked about this off camera. Here's where I start every day. Number one, I will not let negative or painful thoughts have a voice in my life. I say that to myself every morning when I start my day. You would be surprised how amazing that is for you, because at that point, when you don't let them have a voice. They can't create negativity in your life. Second thing that you have to do is no matter what your day is like, you have to say, I'm gonna get out of that chair and do it again tomorrow. Yeah. I'm gonna be there again tomorrow. I'm gonna show up every day. You're not gonna stop me. I'm not gonna quit. I'll never quit. You say to yourself, you know what? This is a little thing you didn't know about me. I don't ever quit.

Dr. Michael Perusich:

Ever. No, never.

Dr. Troy Fox:

And if you tell yourself that, you'll be surprised that you won't quit. Number three, attitude of gratitude. Meaning that at the end of every day. I want you to say and have an accountability partner, whether that's your spouse, your children, your best bud, whoever you're talking to, accountability partner. At the end of every day, attitude of gratitude, I want you to say every day something that you are thankful for. I don't care if your day went to total dog poop. I don't care. This morning I walked into my office, my computer was down or. Aloha system had a little trouble because it was communicating with our software and the other software had a breach and so Aloha was having trouble getting re what do you wanna say? Reconfigured with it, or realigned. So I've had a lot of things that I could complain about. You know what? I went to work, smiled, said, I'm not letting that negativity affect me. Let's go see patients. We'll figure it out. Patients have been agreeable and understood that we also were not panicking. And you know what? I was gra my gratitude was yesterday. I was glad I was inside'cause it was hot here where we're at, and so I, some days your gratitude thing is pretty simple, but that's where you start. Now, if you start there. This is how you start to open the window to where you do. Get in a position where now I can add to that equation. If I could start with that as a, as my bare minimum standard. Now I can add into that. I'm gonna take action steps every day to whatever it may be. So if you have goals set or if you don't have goals, set, good time to set'em. But if you have goals set now you could start to incorporate action steps.'cause guess what? One of the action steps that I do every day, it's a never ending one as well, is I try to do one. Literally un what do I wanna say? I'll think of it here in a minute, right? I wanna do something that's not that's not something that has been brought upon me that I have to do of my own volition. I want to offer someone help every. I wanna do something kind. I don't care if it's opening a door, buying somebody a cup of coffee, helping somebody on the side of the road, something every single day. That's one of my, that's one of the things. So part of my creed or my standard, is that I have to help others every day too. And you may do that in your practice sometimes.

Dr. Michael Perusich:

Yeah. And you, you mentioned getting outta bed in the morning. I say three words to myself every morning when I get up before my feet hit the floor. Very simple, grace and gratitude. That's how I start my day. I say forward and gratitude.

Dr. Troy Fox:

Get your butt up, grace and attitude. I love it. I like yours better than mine.

Dr. Michael Perusich:

You mentioned something about starting blocks and you gotta have a starting point, so we gotta take a break, but I wanna come back and I wanna talk about how we get into the starting blocks. If you ever ran track and you're getting set up in the blocks and before the gun goes off and you take off. You've gotta have the right mindset to make it work. So we come back, we're talking about goals. How do I align, how do I align your goals with your life. So everything is in creed with what you're trying to do. So we'll be right back.

Dr. Michael Perusich:

All right, everybody. Welcome back to the KC ChiroPulse podcast we're talking about. Your goals and are they building your future or are they breaking your life? And Troy, we talked about before the break, we talked about the starting block and how we both kind of start each day and I think that's so important because I think you have to have that pinning point every day, that same starting place every day that. Drives you, whatever it is, for some people maybe it's getting up and working out and just having that energy, but we've gotta do something every day to make sure that negativity doesn't creep in, because that negativity is so heavy. And when I say heavy, I'm not trying to create a term from the sixties, but it's sucks up your energy and your emotional bandwidth and it's just gone if you let it creep in and it will take you under in a hurry.

Dr. Troy Fox:

A hundred percent it will. And I'll tell you what, some of you listening right now are, gosh, these guys are way too motivational. And it's what? This stuff, so whatever. I just do my thing like I have been. But lemme tell you this, I'm gonna tell you something that that I want you to write down. You can't wait for life to start being good to start living.

Dr. Michael Perusich:

Amen.

Dr. Troy Fox:

And I listen to a lot of I I'm addicted to YouTube, I think so far as watching a lot of people that have gone somewhere in their life, but have found a way through adversity. I love stories of adversity, so I end up seeing a lot of tier one operators on, on, on YouTube. And one thing that I heard there, there's a gentleman named Chad Wright on YouTube. Chad looks homeless. He's got a beard down to his waist, ZZ top looking with some tattoos. Chad was a Navy Seal and oh, I know who you're talking about.

Dr. Michael Perusich:

Chad.

Dr. Troy Fox:

Yeah. Chad's a Christian dude that like found Christ after. Anyway, he's got a lot of nuggets of wisdom. But you know what Chad said the other day, quit putting me on a pedestal and thinking I'm different than you. I'm not different than you, I think different than you, right? He taught himself to think differently. And that's the thing that you see with a lot of people that are successful. They're looking at you and you're looking at'em, putting'em on a pedestal. And we've had people do that to us. Oh my gosh, you guys know how to do it. And teach me the secret sauce. You know what the secret sauce is? The secret sauce is don't quit. Have roll your sleeve, have a procedure work, roll your sleeves up, get to work, and have an attitude that you're not gonna quit. Those that feel sorry for themselves and sit in the corner licking their wounds, thinking that somebody else has got some sort of advantage, they don't have. That's where you're wrong. That's where you're wrong. You don't have you, we don't have an advantage. I don't have an advantage in practice that you don't have. You have the exact same advantages that I have, the exact same tools at your disposal. Sometimes we need coaching to bring that out in us, but from a standpoint of you doing it, that's one thing I want you to learn. Number one, don't wait until things don't suck. To start living. Start living now. Yeah, I love that.

Dr. Michael Perusich:

That's a great line.

Dr. Troy Fox:

Number two, grab the bull by the horns. In other words, do not be afraid that you don't have the tools and that somebody else has so many more tools than you to be successful. You have the tools. Sometimes you need a little, you need to be shined up like a brass lamp, but, and sometimes we just need to beat on you like a brass lamp too. It makes a really nice sound when we beat on your head and until you quit doing that. But those are, yeah, sometimes it's hollow. Literally. That's what I look at because the problem with setting goals is, and I've seen it so many times over the years, people set goals at a seminar, right? Yep. Hey, we're gonna goal set today and they set their goals. I guarantee you that notebook that they gave you at the Marriott or wherever.'cause back in the day we always went to the Marriott, right? They'd give you that notebook and you're furiously writing notes down. I'm gonna be a multi-millionaire by the time I'm 36 and you're 35 then, right? You're gonna figure it out. I have half you. 35 and a half, you're gonna write all these goals down and then you have to write a couple easy ones. I'm gonna clean the dog house out today or tomorrow, and my action step is I need to get a broom. We'll do some easy ones that are easy, right? Write a couple easy, and you write all that stuff. And guess what happens? You go home and you never look at it again.

Dr. Michael Perusich:

Yeah, it goes in the drawer in your desk and you find it about 10 years later.

Dr. Troy Fox:

Because you don't have a standard. Yep. You don't have a standard that holds you, so you have to hold yourself to a specific standard. Yep. You can't expect me to call you every day and go, Hey, are you doing what you're supposed to be doing? That's not No. Yeah, sometimes coaches are good for accountability, but if you don't have the mental fortitude to have accountability in your life, and I mean in all areas, spiritual, physical, emotional practice, you need to look at your life and figure out how you're gonna get there. You got to have a proceed. You, you gotta have a standard.

Dr. Michael Perusich:

You do. And part of that standard you just touched on it. I wanna dive into this a little bit deeper. You gotta have the middle capacity for this, and the middle capacity is, and I'm gonna go back to the old adage of what you think about comes about. And Troy, how many times do we hear doctors say that'll ever work in my practice. I could never do that in my life. You, you had you're successful because you live in a different town than I do. Or you had successful parents or your great-great-great grandfather twice removed from the family that lived next door to Abe Lincoln when he was little, had some success. So that's why you've had. If that's what you're thinking about, what you need to think about is I can, everything should start with, I can because there's nothing you can't do in this world. And I, again, I'm gonna go back to something you said a little bit ago. It's about not giving up and it's about having that right mental attitude that I can do whatever it is, finish the sentence. But it's gotta be positive because what you think about comes about. And if you get that negativity in your mindset, that's what takes you down. That's what prevents you from reaching the goals, that's what prevents you from going from 35 to 36 and being a millionaire.

Dr. Troy Fox:

Yeah. And here's the thing. Sometimes you think but I can't because what's gonna happen is I'm gonna tell myself that stuff, but then my negative self thoughts are gonna come in and tell me you can't do that. You know what? You can fix that. You can fix that real quick. I'm not accepting negative self thoughts today. And you know what? If you wanna continue to ne negative self-talk, here's what we're gonna do. We're gonna put our running shoes on and we're gonna go out for a run and we come back. Your attitude better be better,

Dr. Michael Perusich:

right?

Dr. Troy Fox:

And then you come back and I'll tell you what, if you have a good attitude and you come in with this, you will be surprised how infectious a good attitude is. And I'm gonna tell you a secret about me ridiculously I have a dirty little secret that years ago I used to I think I can say this out loud. I used to be what we would call a sport bitcher, and that's a term that I came up with. So when you complain for sport. I was that guy. I thought I was super positive most of the time, but behind closed doors, sometimes I'd be like, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, about that person or this person, or whatever's going on, they're an idiot. Whatever. Whatever I was thinking about. Or they should have done it this way, they should have done it that way. We've all had a little bit of that, right? I'm not the only one. Not the only one, but I made it a habit to do that. And I got around other people that did that as well. And I'll tell you what, it will consume. All the oxygen in the room. Yep. And so if you start saying, I will not accept that negativity, I will not accept negative thoughts, I'm gonna not let pain or consequences enter my life. At this point, I'm gonna talk about the positive and what we're gonna do. You'll be shocked, I guarantee you, in seven days time. You will have an epiphany and you will go, holy cow. So you do the three things. One, you don't let those negative thoughts in. Number two, you remind yourself every day that you're gonna get up and pull yourself up by the bootstraps tomorrow, and you're gonna do it again, same way you did it today. And number three, what am I grateful for today? Yep. I'll tell you what if you're not grateful for something and you can't think of something, I'm gonna tell you. You're a sorry SOB. You know why grace and

Dr. Michael Perusich:

gratitude.

Dr. Troy Fox:

Because here's the deal. You got both your arms and legs, I'm assuming you do, and they both work. If you're a chiropractor, your arms and your legs, you got your mental faculties, you have a place to live. You are the most blessed and privileged. I know privileged sometimes has been a dirty word because people have used it against people. Oh, you're, you've got, you got privilege, like white, but you're privileged.

Dr. Michael Perusich:

You're privileged to be a chiropractor.

Dr. Troy Fox:

But we have privilege. And the thing is, do this because you can and because you've been given this opportunity.'cause there are others that can't. Yeah. So those three little things in seven days will change what you do. And now you're gonna be in the right mindset to set goals. So rather than goals dragging you down, because if you just write goals and you don't ever do'em over and over again, guess what? You're gonna eventually believe that you can't achieve anything.

Dr. Michael Perusich:

Yeah, exactly. And

Dr. Troy Fox:

if you can't achieve anything, guess what? Yours is the practice that you call and go, Hey, I'm 30 days from closing the door, and I'm not sure what to do.

Dr. Michael Perusich:

So here's a challenge. Here's a challenge for everybody. Write down today. Today, in the next hour from hearing this podcast, write down one thing that brings grace in your life and one thing that you're grateful about and I'm gonna help you. It's by grace that God wakes us up every day. It's by that grace that we get the power, we're given the power to go do whatever our talents, whatever our brain, whatever our mindset will allow us to do. It's what allows us to say I can and not put the T on the end of that word, because that should never happen. I can do anything. And it's amazing if you just have that mindset to have one grace and one great one thing, you're grateful for grace and gratitude every single day. Write it down. Write it down if you need to, if you're new to this process, do Troy, write it down. I write stuff down too. But I think that's important. So we need to take another break, but when we come back I just wanna wrap this up and talk about. How important these things are to not only setting goals, but making goals come to fruition. So we'll be right back everybody.

Kats Consultants:

Dr. Michael Perusich:

All right. Welcome back to the KC ChiroPulse Podcast. We are talking about goal setting, but we're talking about it from a different standpoint. You gotta have the mindset for this to work. I know you got something to say. Yeah.

Dr. Troy Fox:

I gotta interject because at the end of that last segment, all I could hear. My earpiece, I could hear seal singing, I can fly, I can touch this guy. I was like, man, but it's so true. If you tell yourself that, that's funny. It's ama,'cause you hear that. And I'll tell you what, there are a lot of people that are gonna listen to this that haven't ever had. Haven't really ever had a standard that they go by in their life, but have tried to set goals and failed that go. That's the secret sauce. That's the missing piece that I needed in there because I wanted to tell myself that I could, but I didn't trust myself to tell myself that I could. So instead, here's what we do. This is the secret of why you don't set goals. Because you do not believe in yourself, and you do not believe that you're gonna be able to achieve those goals. So when you set'em, knowing that you're not gonna achieve them, and then the easiest way to get rid of that pain and discomfort. Is to ignore the fact that you wrote goals and never look at'em again. So if you go this route first and you expand yourself into a position of, attitude of gratitude you set yourself in a position of having a standard that you're gonna meet every day. And when you don't meet it, you know what? Self accountability is a real thing. It is, if you got bad attitude, go out. And like I said, if you can run, get your running shoes on, or go lift weights, go do something. Not as a punishment, but as let's change our attitude. Let's go do something different for a little while and come back.

Dr. Michael Perusich:

It's clearing the mechanism sometimes you have to do that. Absolutely. So every morning I go for a little jog on the beach. It helps me clear my mechanism, but it's after I said me too. I can and grace and gratitude. Yeah. The beach over there in the central Kansas. The beach

Dr. Troy Fox:

in McPherson, Kansas. Yeah. Yeah.

Dr. Michael Perusich:

But I wanna tell a little story. So many years ago back in the days when Troy and I would write stuff on napkins. Yeah. I was sitting in a seminar. You were there too. We were sitting in a seminar that Dr. Kats was putting on. And it was about the goal setting. And he had us do exactly what you talked about a minute ago, write all this stuff down, which I promise you, for most people in the room except for us, I caners. Yep. It went in a drawer somewhere and never got used. Not for me. It was an exercise in

Dr. Troy Fox:

futility for a lot of

Dr. Michael Perusich:

people. Yep. Yeah. And not for me. And Dr. Kats gave us a challenge that day and he said, we're gonna put this class on again a year from now. So I wanna see how many people bring their goals back with them and where you are in reaching those goals. So I took it to heart and my grace was every day I would look at those goals that I'd written down. And my grace was that I have the grace of my life to be able to get to do this and reach for these things. And my gratitude came with seeing myself. Hit those milestones and getting closer and closer. So here was my big goal. My big goal was in a year, and I was new in practice, in a year, I wanted to be successful enough to buy a Lincoln Navigator. Okay? And I wrote down Lincoln Navigator Black. I wrote down all the options that would have, et cetera, et cetera. We get back to that seminar a year later, and Dr. Kat says who remembered to bring their goals? I raised my hand up. And he said, okay, Michael, tell us about your goals. And I told everybody my goals and he said so where are you at in the process? And I said Dr. Kats, I almost reached the goal. And he said tell me where you missed. And I said I got the Lincoln Navigator, but it's not black. It's white.

Dr. Troy Fox:

There you go. Yeah.

Dr. Michael Perusich:

And I never forgot that because that's just the power of. Having that mindset, getting rid of the negativity, getting rid of the, I can't, or I won't, or I don't, getting rid of that, and just flipping it around just slightly. Having that grace and gratitude and understanding where it's coming from and the power it brings to you and shucking off the emotional baggage that pulls you under. It's amazing what you can make happen. And I look back on that experience and think, wow, that was just one of the little stepping stones to where we are today. Yeah. And I don't care where you are in practice. I don't care where you are in life. Don't sit there and say it's too late for me, or This will never work for me. Or, it worked for you guys because you had a different set of, no, it will work for anybody out there. So that's my challenge, is I want you to write down what is your grace and gratitude every day. And do the Dr. Kats exercise, write down your goals, watch yourself, work on'em, and set a use your phone. Set an alert in your phone a year from now. Set an alert in your phone every day to look at them and work them. But a year from now, when that alert goes off, I want you to go back and look at'em and see how far you are in progression towards your goals. I think you'll be amazed

Dr. Troy Fox:

and if you have standards in your life, you're gonna be looking at'em every day. And you're gonna be looking forward to that year point from now to go through.'cause you already know that you're doing well because you have a standard. It's kinda like this, think of it this way. Obesity is raging in our country, right? And you know what? People get pulled on TV all the time. It's not your fault. I would venture to say that about 95% of the time it is your fault and you can be mad at me. You can do whatever you want. I've been heavier than I am now. I've been overweight at one point in my life. I've lost weight. I've gained weight. But what I learned was is you know what a hundred percent of it is right here. It's what I want to do. Because I remember when I decided once and for all, I am no longer gonna be obese. I'm no longer gonna have high blood pressure and be borderline diabetic.'cause that's where I was at. And I'm not there now. But when I was there, I made a decision and I said, you know what, you're gonna do this. You are not gonna die. And I kept telling myself every day, that was when my self talked to myself. You are not gonna die from not having food. Shut up, drink a glass of water, eat a pickle, and move on. That's

Dr. Michael Perusich:

right.

Dr. Troy Fox:

And I did. And I got to a point of where then I was, my stomach had shrank so much. And I had to set alarms to remind myself to eat. Because I was really, my body was really getting used to working off of less fuel and it was starting to burn fat. But I will tell you that the point behind that is, is you need to clean up all your life. So if you if you can't clean up where you're at from a diet standpoint and you go, oh, I can't do without my Dr. Pepper, you're not ready. You don't have a standard. You already know that Dr. Pepper's not good for you. Now if you have a Dr. Pepper once every three months, do I ever have a pop? Absolutely. I love Dr. Pepper, but I don't drink it all the time about, if we get ready to go on a trip, that's always my thing. If we're getting ready to head to the airport to go somewhere, I'm probably gonna have a couple of food items that I don't normally have anyway. I'm like, ah, what's a Dr. Pepper hurt? That's when I'll do it. But in my daily life, I don't. So if you're gonna pick and choose your battles. Pick that battle, but it needs to be in all parts of your life. So in other words, if you are wildly outta whack in one part of your life, spiritually, emotionally, physically, practice, if you're outta whack somewhere, it's gonna help pull the whole rest of the planet out of orbit. You know what I mean? So you need to work on all areas. So if you're gonna set a standard for yourself, it needs to involve all areas. If you're gonna set goals for yourself, you need to involve all areas. It's not just, Hey, I'm gonna set a practice dollar goal for myself. You need to set personal goals for yourself. Yeah, I want to get to percentage body fat, or whatever it may be.

Dr. Michael Perusich:

Your goals have to be so aligned that they spill over into your personal life because guess what? You're the same person whether you're at the clinic or you're at home, or you're at one of your kids' little league games, and it has to carry through all through that. And I'm gonna sum up what you just said. It's garbage in, garbage out. If you want garbage coming out, then put garbage in. So we gotta change our mindset for this to work. If you want to, if you want to have a Lamborghini, for example, you're, it's probably not gonna run very well if you put diesel fuel in it. Because diesel fuel to a Lamborghini is garbage. And you're gonna ruin the car. So if you want to be a Lamborghini in practice in life, and you wanna set goals that take you from here to infinity and beyond, yes, I stole that from Toy Story. If you want that, then go get it. Just put the right fuel in. Good talk Troy.

Dr. Troy Fox:

Man, I'll tell you what, that, if you guys listen to this, yeah. You, if you listen to this and you didn't get something out of this that you can use every day, you're tone deaf at this point.
